How Directors Got It To The Big Screen

In the fifth episode of the Spokane International Film Festival’s 2011 Filmmaker Forums, Eastern Washington University’s Professor of Screenwriting, Film Industry Law, Theory and Criticism, Marvin Smith moderates as directors Nora Bateson (An Ecology of Mind), Sara McIntyre (Two Indians Talking) and Danielle Barbieri (Lady Lily (Adventures in God’s Country)) discuss their feature directorial debuts and what it took to get their films to the big screen.

The panel members describe their varied processes for getting their films made, from the time they each spent in production to the trials and tribulations they encountered in the editing room.  They also field several questions from the audience regarding scripted versus unscripted productions,  how they developed their narratives from vast collections of footage and working with other people’s scripts. Other topics include advice on how to prepare for your first film project, what they budgeted for their first projects and what those projects ended up costing.
