Long ago, in December of 2009, FAVES sponsored its first short film event at the Magic Lantern: ReelSpokane: A Homegrown Film Event. The winning film at the first ReelSpokane was “Lady Luck: Case No. 37,” directed by North by Northwest Productions editor Jason McKee and written by local actor Tom Olson. The darkly comic film noir throwback was selected to be shown at the Spokane International Film Festival (SpIFF), where it won the Golden SpIFFY for Best Short Film. What’s in store for “Lady Luck” and McKee now?
McKee entered “Lady Luck” in Open Film‘s 2nd Get It Made Competition. Open Film is “a technology company and online community of film lovers and filmmakers working together to change the way independent film is discovered, financed and distributed…where creativity meets opportunity,” according to its website. Among other things, Open Film sponsors film contests in which hopefuls post short videos online, where they are voted upon by the Open Film online community and viewed by Open Film’s Advisory Board.
The top ten videos with the most and highest votes, and which are approved by the Advisory Board, are eligible for the grand prize: $500,000 and the opportunity to be produced as a feature film. The Advisory Board is helmed by veteran actor James Caan and populated by Academy-Award winning actor Robert Duvall, Academy-Award nominated director Mark Rydell, and actor/screenwriter Scott Caan.
At the moment, “Lady Luck” is the second most-viewed out of 115 videos and ranked with 4 stars. Help “Lady Luck” win by viewing and voting for the short on Open Film. You will have to register on the site, but the process is simple, and once you’re a member, you may find it difficult to stop watching and voting to all the films! Voting is open until January 31st, 2010 — vote early and spread the word so McKee can get into the top ten. Click on the image below to go to Open Film.
