Public Video Art Opportunity in Portland, OR!

Today we received this info from Karen Mobley, Arts Director of the Spokane Arts Commission.

Exhibit dates: September 22, 2010 – March 30, 2011

Partners:  Governor’s Office of Film and Television (Susan Haley); Northwest Film Center (Bill Foster); Mark Shapiro (Laika Studios); Portland 3-D Center of Art and Photography (Stacy Webb).

Scope of Work

Exhibit purpose:  To engage, educate and entertain passengers, specifically promoting NW developments within the film industry.


Exhibit materials: Exhibitor to work with Port partners in gathering materials for illustrating the development of 3-D technology in the NW region, focusing specifically on advances within the entertainment and film industry. Exhibit may also include how these developments are impacting other industries (medical prosthetic devices, for instance).

Exhibitors will be responsible for acquisition, transportation, installation and removal of all items. Proof of insurance will be required prior to exhibit installation.

Theme: Illustrate the development of 3-D entertainment technology, specifically in the NW region.

Exhibit requirements: Exhibit should engage passengers by using devices and materials with which they are familiar (View master, for example). It should explain the process of 3-D development in layman’s terms and indicate the direction the industry is headed (new developments, emerging applications).

Exhibit should focus on developments in the NW region (Oregon and SW Washington), avoiding the promotion of one organization over another (no advertising). Exhibit should focus on developments in the entertainment industry.

Proposals will be evaluated by Port staff.  Display artists will be required to enter into a personal services contract with the Port, examples of which are available upon request.

ArtObjects Case Description

Exhibits will be featured in a secured, lighted glass case at the entrance to Concourse E.

General Specifications:  The ArtOBJECTS space is designed to feature 3-dimensional objects.  The case runs parallel to the concourse.  Display length is 40’; depth is 4.5’; height is 9’.

The case is backed by a 9’ high frosted glass curtain wall and has a single access door (36” wide X 93” high) located at one end.  A built-in pedestal shelf (18” high X 30”deep) runs the length of the interior and must be incorporated into exhibition proposals.  Objects cannot be suspended from the ceiling.   (See attached picture and drawing).

Furnishings:  There are a limited number of small pedestals available.  Additional furnishings (e.g., easels, special pedestals, mounts) may be available from PDX with advance notice in the planning stages.

Heating and Air Conditioning:  The environment is controlled by the PDX HVAC system. The case is self-contained with a south/southwest exposure; therefore, the temperature may vary throughout the day.

Lighting:  The case has both natural and artificial light.  The back wall of frosted glass allows natural light. There are also 15 halogen lights burning 24/7. Exhibitors may choose to use some or all of the lights.

Accessibility and Security:  The display is visually accessible only to passengers who have cleared security or to those who have made formal arrangements with PDX Customer Service in advance. The case is secured by a lock at the bottom right corner of the door.

Insurance:  The Port of Portland shall have no liability to exhibitors  for loss or damage suffered due to theft or any act of a third party or any acts of nature, to the extent allowed by law, including Oregon Tort Claim laws.  The Port of Portland shall only be liable for the gross negligence or willful misconduct of its own Port employees, but not for the actions of agents, contractors, other airport employees, passengers or visitors of any nature.
